Direction 1
I want to discover how relevant are statues to the modern British society? Do statue hold power of representation? Can statues shape and influence the identity of the individuals of British society? Are current statues in the UK a representation of black people? I also would like to know what are the current references that black people look at to shape their identity, or how tearing down Edward Colston statue is shaping the identity of black people across the United Kingdom?
Direction 2
The PM Boris Johnson has called ‘crime’ the tearing down of Edward Colston statue. Form the point of view of BLM this action has helped to raise awareness on the history of black people in the United Kingdom. I would like to explore other options to raise awareness about racism. What has been the real impact on black history by tearing down a statue?
I ask, can society progress and embrace modernism without talking about racism? Are BLM actions against Edward Colston statue trigger a revision of British ideals and values? Is BLM trying to change British history?
Direction 3
I would like to explore how BLM is incorporated into British society. What is made of the current British identity? Can the British identity embrace the value of black history and BLM? What is the identity that the current system supports and promote?
All the direction was broad for a 500 words essay. The next step to follow was to refine each direction into short sentences:
